In Her Father’s Eyes: A Slovak Childhood in the Shadow of the Holocaust

This moving exhibit from the Museum of History and Holocaust Education at Kennesaw State University documents the short life of Kitty Weichherz, a Czechoslovakian girl born in the same year as Anne Frank.

Family photographs and entries in Kitty’s diary offer a window into the everyday life of a child: birthday parties, the first day of school, a first boyfriend.

Told through the loving eyes of her surviving father, Kitty’s story paints a portrait of a young girl’s innocence in the face of increasing anti-Jewish sentiment on the eve of World War II. The touching story of just one girl, one family, emphasizes the humanity of millions just like Kitty who were lost in this tragic war.

In Her Father’s Eyes: A Slovak Childhood in the Shadow of the Holocaust was curated in partnership with Dr. Daniel Magilow of the University of Tennessee and graduate students in Youngstown State University's Public History Program.

The exhibit is on display at the Sharon Forks Library August 2 - 22, 2019.

Andrea Miskewicz, Onsite Education Coordinator for the Museum of History and Holocaust Education at Kennesaw State University, will visit the Sharon Forks Library on Saturday, August 17 at 3:00 p.m. to speak on the history of the Holocaust (1933-1945), as well as stories of children who were victims and survivors of the Nazi regime.
