Alisha M. Cromwell, Ph.D., Adjunct Instructor of History at the University of North Georgia, will share the story of Mary Anne Cowper and her enslaved market woman, Flora, and the ways they participated as businesswomen in the economy of Savannah.
Dr. Cromwell will explain how Mary Anne Cowper's elite familial connections allowed her to operate in the male-dominated world of global commerce and how the wealth she accumulated allowed her choices, like the decision to marry or not, which were unavailable to the majority of nineteenth century women. Dr. Cromwell will also explore the ways Flora performed and transformed traditional European and African gender roles in the local Savannah marketplace, which enabled her to garner a small income and to maintain certain freedoms in a slave society.
